The 1986 - 87 season is one of the most eventful seasons in the history of Pisa Sporting Club. Having been relegated to Serie B the previous season, the club’s aim was a rapid return to Serie A. Although successful in the end, many things looked uncertain at the start, with the club even beginning the season without a shirt sponsor. Initially experiencing a slow start, coach Gigi Simoni’s side turned things around and slowly gained positions over the course of the season. Until a dramatic climax on the final day, where a win over direct competitors Cremonese proved enough to clinch a second-place finish and with it direct promotion to the top flight.
